*The last photo, entitled “Unfinished”, is another example of my son’s work. It’s also for sale.*

This is an amazing, decorative wall hanging. And yes, it is handmade! One of a kind (OOAK) chip carving on finished basswood with mahogany frame; signed by artist (1999). Dominick Paul began chip carving in late 1997 and was self taught. “Recovering Grey” is his largest and final piece in a series of 10 carvings.

“Recovering Grey” took over 2,000 hours to complete by hand and began without sketches, computers, lasers, or electric tools. He drew his design directly onto the basswood and used several chip carving tools (and some modified magnification goggles). It currently hangs on a wall at our home, but Paul has decided to sell the piece and so we’re proud to offer it on Etsy.

There are encrypted and hidden messages within the carving, so feel free to try and find them! (You might also notice a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright in parts of the design.)

6.25 feet (1.91 meters) wide
7.25 feet (2.21 meters) tall
See me in a photo for scale (I’m 5’7″).
